Since its development in 1984, PDS has been the chosen pallet software tool throughout the industry.

The main function of the PDS is to lead manufacturers through the complete specifications of the custom pallets, such as pallet type, size, style, and dimensions. It is also used to determine wood species and recycled components. The software then creates a pallet specification sheet with fully-dimensioned 2-D drawings to reference.

Next, PDS is used as a high-quality engineering design tool to complete a structural, durability, or physical properties analysis. A series of questions will be asked to determine the intended conditions of use. The engineering software allows manufacturers to accurately determine the performance of the custom pallets under the intended conditions without expensive and inefficient test trials. PDS can also complete comparisons of performances between different pallet designs, wood species, grades, fasteners, or component dimensions. Standard pallets are typically around 48 inches (122 cm) in length and 40 inches (102 cm) in width. Any pallet that exceeds these dimensions could be considered oversized.

There are no regulations on the maximum size of a pallet, but bear in mind that material handling equipment such as forklifts will dictate what size is safe.

Pallets of smaller sizes, such as 36×36 pallets, are sometimes used as bases for retail displays and for smaller loads than standard pallets.

The standard size of a pallet is 48×40. Any pallet that exceeds those measurements may be considered a large pallet.

New 48×40 wooden pallets typically cost between $10 and $30 per pallet, but prices can be higher for specialty or custom pallets.
