Shipping Logistics With Custom Pallets

Packaging and shipping are vital factors in many industries, especially those that need to ship valuable or high-demand products. Unintentional negligence or incorrect shipping materials can waste both time and money. To avoid losing potential benefits, it is important to make sure the right shipping materials are at hand. Investing in custom pallets to optimize the company’s processes and lower the overall cost of shipping can be highly advantageous.

What Are Large Custom Pallets?

Large wooden pallets are used in the shipping and transportation industries to move and protect materials. Pallets help protect these materials as they are handled by equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or conveyors. Pallets provide a sturdy base for stacking multiple items, and the pallet bases are constructed to make it easier for forklifts or pallet jacks to pick up the shipments. Wooden pallets are designed to support the full weight of shipments, withstand rough handling during shipping, and ensure adequate top board spacing to avoid the forklift blade piercing any of the materials. Custom pallets exceed regular wooden pallets because they create a better fit within shipping containers while using less wood and materials.

The only difference between custom pallets and traditional pallets is the specifications the custom pallets need to meet. Troymill Wood Products has the capacity to provide the exact shipping materials needed, no matter how unique the shape or dimensions. Before we fabricate these custom pallets, there are three shipping factors to consider first.

Three Factors To Consider When Choosing a Wood Pallet Manufacturer

Custom pallets may seem simple at first glance, but Troymill must ensure that meeting specifications will not undermine durability or reliability. Before we work on a custom project, we work with customers to consider three factors:

  1. Strength- For efficient and safe shipping, custom pallets need to be strong enough to support the weight of the materials shipped. Once exact load requirements are determined, we will gain more insight into how to increase the strength of the large wooden pallets.
  2. Stiffness- If the pallets are going to be used to transport heavy materials, they must be strong enough to resist bending and deforming. When pallet deck boards begin to deform, the integrity and stability of the entire shipment is compromised.
  3. Durability- Before we begin, we need to know the type of product being shipped and how it needs to be protected. This way, we can design custom pallets with adequate top board spacing to prevent forklift blades from impacting the products.

Once we have determined the right shipping sizes and details, our team will design the custom pallets with our Pallet Design System (PDS).

What is a Pallet Design System?

The Pallet Design System™ is a software platform we use as a product specification and engineering tool. The PDS software was designed for the wood pallet industry for accurate analytics and designs. Since its development in 1984, PDS has been the chosen pallet software tool throughout the industry.

The main function of the PDS is to lead manufacturers through the complete specifications of the custom pallets, such as pallet type, size, style, and dimensions. It is also used to determine wood species and recycled components. The software then creates a pallet specification sheet with fully-dimensioned 2-D drawings to reference.

Next, PDS is used as a high-quality engineering design tool to complete a structural, durability, or physical properties analysis. A series of questions will be asked to determine the intended conditions of use. The engineering software allows manufacturers to accurately determine the performance of the custom pallets under the intended conditions without expensive and inefficient test trials. PDS can also complete comparisons of performances between different pallet designs, wood species, grades, fasteners, or component dimensions. Finally, the software’s structural analysis and safe load estimates reduce concerns about human health and safety, as well as concerns about product damage due to poor pallet strength, stiffness, or durability.

Oversized Pallets For Sale FAQs

Standard pallets are typically around 48 inches (122 cm) in length and 40 inches (102 cm) in width. Any pallet that exceeds these dimensions could be considered oversized.

There are no regulations on the maximum size of a pallet, but bear in mind that material handling equipment such as forklifts will dictate what size is safe.

Pallets of smaller sizes, such as 36×36 pallets, are sometimes used as bases for retail displays and for smaller loads than standard pallets.

The standard size of a pallet is 48×40. Any pallet that exceeds those measurements may be considered a large pallet.

New 48×40 wooden pallets typically cost between $10 and $30 per pallet, but prices can be higher for specialty or custom pallets.
