Applications for Bulk Wood Crates

Why use crating instead of one of our customized wood pallets? In some industries, crating simply proves more effective and beneficial. Here are some examples.
• Agricultural products: Have you ever tried to place a pile of sweet potatoes or regular potatoes on a flat surface? It usually does not go well. Even if you have strapping, the odd potato shape makes it easy for the produce to escape. With crating this problem is eradicated. Potatoes will be stored safely, more can be carried, and there will be no run-away potatoes! The same holds true for other produce that needs to be protected from bruising or that has odd shapes. Our heat treatment ensures the crating used for these applications is appropriate.
• Industrial: Many of our crating customers are in the industrial sector. That is because parts, much like agricultural produce, can be fragile, oddly shaped, and heavy. Some examples of industrial applications are:

Aerospace Industry

Engine components, wing components, fuselage parts, and more all can be protected to the maximum potential when shipped via crates.

Marine Industry

Manufacturers of cruise and cargo ship parts using our crates. Those parts may include propellers, engines, and crankshafts.

Military

The military often requires bulk wooden crates for the shipping of hardware, ordinance, and food for soldiers stationed overseas or around the country.

Bulk Wooden Crates FAQs

Wooden crates and wooden boxes are both types of wooden containers used for shipping, storage, and packaging, but they differ in their construction and design. Here are the key differences between wooden crates and wooden boxes:

Wooden Crate:
Open Construction: Wooden crates typically have an open construction with slatted sides. They are designed with gaps or openings between the wooden slats, allowing for ventilation and visibility of the contents.
Simplified Design: Crates are known for their simpler and sturdier design, featuring fewer components. They often consist of just a wooden frame with slats or planks on the sides, top, and bottom.
Reusable: Wooden crates are commonly used in industries where items need to be transported multiple times. They are sturdy and can be reused for various shipments.
Easy Access: The open design of wooden crates allows for easy access to the contents, making them suitable for products that may need to be accessed frequently during transportation.
Packing Material: Crates are typically used for packing heavy, irregularly shaped, or fragile items, such as machinery, artwork, or glass. They provide excellent protection and stability.

Wooden Box:
Closed Construction: Wooden boxes are enclosed containers with solid sides, top, and bottom. They do not have openings or gaps in their construction.
Versatile Design: Wooden boxes come in various designs and can be tailored to specific needs. They may include hinged lids, compartments, and additional features.
One-Time Use: Wooden boxes are often designed for one-time or limited-use applications. They are not as readily reusable as crates, which are built for durability and repeated use.
Security: The closed design of wooden boxes provides enhanced security and protection for valuable or delicate items, making them suitable for storage or shipping.
Customization: Wooden boxes are used for a wide range of applications and are often customized to fit the dimensions and requirements of the items they will contain.

Softwoods like pine are often a popular choice for constructing wooden crates. Pine is readily available, cost-effective, and easy to work with. It provides adequate strength and durability for many crate applications. Pine crates are suitable for lightweight to moderately heavy items and are often used for shipping and storage.

Hardwood, Such as Oak or Maple: Hardwoods like oak or maple are chosen when greater strength and durability are required. Hardwood crates can withstand heavy loads and are often used for valuable or heavy items that need extra protection during shipping and storage.

Treated Wood: If the crates will be exposed to moisture or outdoor conditions, using treated wood is a wise choice.

The weight-bearing capacity of a wooden crate can vary significantly depending on multiple factors, including the type of wood, the crate’s construction, and its design. There is no fixed weight limit that applies universally to all wooden crates. Instead, the following factors influence a crate’s load-bearing capacity: the type of wood used, with hardwoods like oak and maple generally offering greater strength than softwoods; the quality of construction, with well-crafted crates having better load-bearing capabilities; the design and reinforcements, where reinforced bases and additional supports can enhance capacity; load distribution, where even weight distribution is crucial to avoid overloading; the intended use, as crates for heavy machinery differ from those for smaller items; wood treatment, which affects durability, especially in outdoor settings; and the choice of support equipment for handling and distributing the load. The specific weight-bearing capacity of a wooden crate can vary widely.
